THE spread-betting boom continues. Today IG Index, the grandaddy of the sector, unveiled strong results that show it has fully recovered from the Lehman Brothersinspired financial crisis.
Growth went into reverse in October 2008 as the credit crunch began, but now IG is back to opening 3000 new accounts a month in the UK as more private investors get a taste for spreads and contracts for difference.
In the year to May trading revenue jumped 16% to Pounds 299 million, with profits up 26% to Pounds 140 million.
The Japanese business has turned around and there are also strong numbers coming from Australia and Germany. As the biggest player with a market share of well over 40%, IG expects to be targeted by the smaller competition.
“They aren’t having much success at the moment,” said chief executive Tim Howkins.
Asked if spread betting might be usurped by the next new thing, he replied: “There is always a risk that any industry could be obliterated by innovation. We like to think that we could be the innovators.”
Howkins reckons growth is likely to be organic rather than via takeovers, but says he’d do deals if they made sense
